Over 300 participants, representing over 200 organisations attended the first European Gender Summit in 2011. We, as organisers, brought together 65 speakers (pdf) from leading roles in:
• European universities
• private and public sector research organisations
• national and international research funding bodies
• national and international policy
• pan-European scientific committees
• science journals and publications
Speakers explored how the gender dimension stimulates excellence and innovation in R&D&I and showcased examples of effective gender equality programmes (2011 programme with session descriptions pdf). Delegates exhibited over 50 posters (2011 Posters summaries and download).
Outcomes
As part of the European Gender Summit we conducted extensive consultation with hundreds of representatives of the scientific community during and in the run up to the European Gender Summit. Through this a collective agreement on policy development on gender for innovation improvement, entitled the Policy Manifesto on "Integrated Action on the Gender Dimension in Research”, was produced. The Manifesto was presented to Máire Geoghegan Quinn, EC Commissioner for Research, Innovation & Science on 16 Dec 2011 and has received over 4000 signatures since. Through this support of the R&D&I community we were able to secure the European Parliament as the venue for this year’s event, and thereby ensure that gender is central to policy discussions about the upcoming reshaping of European research. This year we will build on the discussions and examine how incorporation of the gender dimension in our R&D&I can benefit Europe and European research. This will be considered mainly in the context three current European Commission policy initiatives: Horizon 2020; the European Research Area; and Innovation Union.
In response to the strong demand exhibited for opportunities to contribute to policy dicussions, demonstrated by the huge response we received to the public consultation, this year we are launching a European Gender Summit online Community Platform to gather more of your views and to further improve exchange and formation of multilateral networks within the community.
